We are Decarcerate St. Louis, a group of formerly incarcerated St. Louisans and their allies. We are dedicated to ending prisoner abuse and neglect, dismantling mass incarceration, and creating alternatives to imprisonment in the St. Louis region and throughout the state of Missouri.
On this site, you will find links to stories and articles about the Workhouse and mass incarceration. You will also find written and video testimonials from members of our community who have been locked up in the Workhouse.
If you would like to share your experience of being locked up in the Workhouse, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
You can share your story privately with a member of our group. If you would like, we can also share your story on this website.
We are calling on the Public Safety Director, Richard Gray, to immediately close the St. Louis City Medium Security Institution — also known as the Workhouse. The conditions in the Workhouse are inhumane, ranging from lack of air conditioning throughout most of jail, to frequent sightings of mold and insects, to medical neglect and physical abuse. The Public Safety Department, Circuit Attorney’s Office, and Mayor’s Office MUST IMMEDIATELY show a serious commitment to shutting down the Workhouse and establishing alternatives to incarceration that minimize — and even eliminate — the need for jails.
